The Postpartum Mother
Eating Through the Fog
14 weeks postpartum. Cleared by her OB. Ferritin: 8.
Dani Vasquez came in four months after her second delivery, describing what she called "the worst brain fog of my life." She was sleeping when the baby slept, eating reasonably, doing everything her OB recommended. Her standard postpartum panel had been flagged as normal. We ran a full iron panel, thyroid antibodies, and a B-vitamin screen. Her ferritin was an 8 — technically within range, functionally depleted. Her free T3 was at the floor of normal. We built a food protocol centered on heme iron timing, B12 repletion through diet and targeted supplementation, and meal structures that could be assembled in under seven minutes with a toddler underfoot. By week eight, she described the fog lifting "like a window being cleaned."
